Roofing Felt Thickness vs Weight: Compare Both Correctly
Understand why thickness readings and roll mass are separate buying checks for paper-based asphalt roofing felt.

Two measurements describe different things
Thickness describes the sheet at the point where it is measured. Roll mass describes the weight of a specified roll on an agreed basis. Both can be useful, but one number should not be substituted for the other.
For paper-based asphalt roofing felt, buyers should record width, length, mass, surface and the agreed thickness requirements separately. This creates a more complete specification than a quotation based on one headline figure.
Make sample measurements comparable
A thickness comparison needs an agreed method and representative measurement locations. Surface texture and the way a measuring instrument contacts the sheet can affect a reading. Record the instrument and method rather than relying on an isolated photograph.
Likewise, a weight comparison needs a defined mass basis and sheet area. If one roll is longer or includes different packaging, its total mass cannot be treated as a direct thickness comparison.
Avoid automatic grade conversions
A local product number, a roll sold by pounds and an overseas grade designation are not automatically equivalent. The actual specification and any claimed test standard must be checked independently.
If your purchasing requirement includes a particular standard, send it with the inquiry. Product naming and an approximate dimensional match should not replace the documents required for that exact offered product.
Write an order that can be checked
Link the approved sample to a specification containing the dimensions, mass basis, measurement requirements and tolerances. Include packaging details so the sample and production rolls can be compared consistently.
Merily supplies a range of roll lengths and weights. Tell us which measurements matter to your purchasing team so the quotation and sample review address the same requirements.
