Asphalt Roofing Felt Buyer Guide

Paper Base and Roll Core: Two Different Parts of Roofing Felt

Distinguish the sheet reinforcement from the winding core when specifying, inspecting and packaging asphalt roofing felt.

The paper base belongs to the sheet

The base paper is the substrate impregnated and coated with petroleum asphalt. It is part of the roofing felt sheet itself. When a buyer asks for paper-based felt, this is the material construction being described.

Include this construction in the product description so it remains clear even if the trade name changes between markets or languages. A label that only says felt leaves more room for confusion.

The roll core belongs to the wound unit

The core is the central support around which the sheet is wound. It is different from the paper substrate inside the sheet. A core photograph helps show the wound roll, but it does not on its own identify the sheet’s complete material specification.

Core and winding arrangements can also affect the finished roll dimensions and packed-unit mass. Confirm the required arrangement when matching an existing presentation or loading plan.

Check both during sample approval

Inspect the sheet separately from the wound unit. Record the construction, surface and roll dimensions, then review winding tightness, core position and packing condition.

For a weight comparison, state whether the core is included in the measured mass. This keeps the supplier’s sample record and the buyer’s inspection record on the same basis.

Make your product code complete

A repeat-order specification should bring the sheet and roll details together: paper-based construction, asphalt treatment, width, length, mass, winding and wrapping. Tie these to one approved sample reference.

Merily provides product and core-detail photographs to help buyers review the offered roll format. Send a sample reference when you need a close match to your current distribution product.
