Tar Paper and Petroleum Asphalt Felt: Clarifying the Material
“Tar paper” is a familiar buying name, but it does not establish the binder’s source. When discussing Merily’s product, use the actual description: paper-based felt treated with petroleum asphalt.

Separate the common name from the composition
Buyers may use tar paper, asphalt paper or bitumen paper for related-looking materials. A common name is not a chemical analysis or a complete specification.
IKO’s published felt safety document is an example of industry terminology that includes tar paper alongside asphalt roofing felt names; it does not make another supplier’s product identical.
Ask for the offered material description
Confirm the substrate, binder description and relevant product documents. Do not assume a coal-tar product and petroleum-asphalt felt are interchangeable because both are dark sheets.
Merily’s product information describes petroleum-asphalt treatment. We do not use the nickname to claim coal-tar content or to borrow a different product’s safety classification.

Keep safety and compatibility product-specific
Request the documentation required for your handling or intended use. A different manufacturer’s SDS helps explain terminology but cannot become Merily’s SDS.
Do not make broad “harmless”, “non-toxic” or compatibility promises from the name alone.
Put it in your buying record
| Buying term | Useful meaning | Needs verification |
|---|---|---|
| Tar paper | Common market wording | Actual composition |
| Petroleum asphalt felt | Offered binder description | Exact product documents |
| Coal-tar reference | Different material enquiry | Specific composition and suitability |
| SDS | Product safety information | Correct supplier/product scope |
Questions buyers ask
Does tar paper necessarily contain coal tar?
The nickname alone does not establish composition. Ask for the actual product description.
Can Merily’s asphalt felt use another brand’s SDS?
No. Request documentation applicable to the supplied product.
Which wording should an importer use?
State paper-based petroleum-asphalt felt, then add dimensions, mass, packing and requirements.
