Application & selection

The right material for the right layer.

Thin PE surface film forms the surface finish of a waterproofing membrane. Choose the gauge, film width and printed format around the membrane construction and the way the finished roll is handled and installed.

Where it is used

For the surface treatment of SBS and other bituminous waterproofing membranes. Thin surface-film grades are specified separately from thicker HDPE facing and finished-roll shrink wrapping.

Technical data for the stated grade.

Reference grade12 ± 1 μm; width 1080 ± 10 mm
Maximum force — MD / TD14 / 10 N/50 mm
Elongation at break — MD / TD162% / 254%

The mechanical values shown apply to the stated 12 μm thin PE film. They do not describe thick HDPE surface film or shrink-wrap grades.

Practical purchasing checks

Make the order fit your production.

Use the right film for the right position

Tell us whether the film is for membrane surfacing or finished-roll packaging. These are different duties and are quoted separately.

Match width and winding

Specify the finished membrane width, film slit width and winding requirements. Confirm the trial format before a full production order.

Make printing part of the order specification

For printed film, provide the artwork, repeat length, colour requirements and the face on which the print must appear.

Packing & supply

Agree the packing before shipment.

Typical roll weightApprox. 50 kg
Pallet layout4 × 4 = 16 rolls; approx. 800 kg of film per pallet
20-ft container planning20 pallets / 320 rolls / approx. 16 tonnes of film
40-ft container planning35 pallets / 560 rolls / approx. 28 tonnes of film
Container selection20-ft containers are often the more practical option for this dense film
Shipment confirmationFilm-weight figures exclude pallets and packing; confirm the loaded gross weight and permitted payload before shipment

Packing photographs show examples. The final packing list states the roll count, net/gross weight and dimensions for the actual order.

Production lead time

Standard order: approximately 10 days for one 40-ft container order.

Customized specification: approximately 10–15 days.

Confirm the schedule against the final specification and order. Ocean or road transit is separate from production lead time.

Plan by gauge, width and weight

Film yield & container planning.

Material-volume referenceApprox. 1.08 m³ per tonne of PE film; material volume, not packed shipping volume
8 μm exampleApprox. 135 m² per kg
8 μm at 1050 mm widthApprox. 128.6 linear metres per kg
8 μm at 1080 mm widthApprox. 125.0 linear metres per kg
12 μm comparisonApprox. 90 m² per kg
CalculationArea (m²/kg) = 1080 ÷ thickness (μm); linear metres/kg = area ÷ width (m)

Theoretical film yield excludes the core, coating and packing. A 16-roll pallet at approximately 50 kg per roll contains approximately 800 kg of film. Planning quantities: 20-ft = 20 pallets, approximately 16 tonnes; 40-ft = 35 pallets, approximately 28 tonnes. Confirm the actual packed gross weight and container payload for the shipment.

Product FAQ

Questions about PE Surface Film.

Is this the film commonly called SBS film?

This product is thin PE surface film used in SBS bituminous membrane production. “SBS film” describes the application; the material itself is PE.

Which gauges are common?

8 and 12 μm are common within the 7–15 μm range. Choose the exact grade around your membrane design and process.

Can the film be printed?

Plain and printed formats can be discussed. Provide artwork, print repeat and winding requirements with the requested dimensions.

Is this the 50 μm film for wrapping finished rolls?

No. The 50 μm wrapping grade is listed separately under HDPE Surface & Shrink Film. Do not use the thin-film technical table for that product.
