Calculate Thin PE Surface Film Consumption per Finished Membrane Roll

Calculate film use from the actual supplied width and your membrane run length. The nominal membrane area alone can hide width allowance and the difference between 8 and 12 μm film.

Define the area consumed

For one film layer, multiply input-film width by the length consumed. State the number of layers and any buyer-defined process allowance separately.

Do not automatically use the membrane’s saleable area if a wider film is being purchased and consumed. Keep the input dimensions visible.

Use the PE thickness conversion

The planning formula is approximately 1080 ÷ thickness in μm, giving m²/kg. At 8 μm, film area is about 135 m²/kg; at 12 μm it is about 90.

These are material calculations, not measured consumption on your line. They exclude packaging and do not establish technical equivalence between thicknesses.

Work through a simple roll example

For a 10 m membrane run using one 1080 mm-wide layer, input-film area is 10.8 m². At 8 μm that is about 0.080 kg; at 12 μm it is about 0.120 kg.

If the same run uses two layers, the calculated input doubles before any separate allowance. Keep the layer count tied to the actual construction rather than a generic membrane example.

Turn the estimate into a purchasing quantity

Multiply the defined run quantity by your production plan and state allowances explicitly. Compare the estimate with your actual usage record to refine planning.

Send Merily the required thickness, width and total quantity, plus any roll limits. Select the technical grade for your process before comparing cost per finished roll.

Questions for This Purchase

Are these measured line-consumption figures?

No. They are arithmetic examples for the stated dimensions.

Can I ignore extra input width?

Use the film width actually consumed.

Does lower calculated mass prove a suitable grade?

No. Confirm the technical requirement separately.
