Cross-Laminated HDPE or Ordinary HDPE Facing: Compare Construction Before Substitution
Both offers may say HDPE, but that does not make them the same film. Compare the actual structure, intended facing duty and grade-specific mechanical requirements before evaluating an alternative for a waterproofing membrane.

Separate polymer from construction
HDPE identifies the polymer family. Cross-laminated HDPE adds a specific construction description. Merily maintains separate product pages for cross-laminated film and HDPE surface film because a common material name is not proof that the products have the same performance.
If your current material is cross-laminated, keep that identity in the inquiry even when requesting an alternative. Explain the membrane construction and the property requirement you want the alternative to meet. Do not shorten the specification to “HDPE 100 μm” and lose the construction detail.
Compare the application at the selected gauge
Common gauges in both facing discussions include 100 and 150 μm, but each quoted grade needs its own technical requirements. The cross-laminated product’s 100 μm reference values must not be transferred to ordinary HDPE surface film.
Selected HDPE facing grades may be evaluated as alternatives in suitable membrane constructions. That is an application-specific selection, not a claim that every ordinary HDPE film is a universal equivalent of a cross-laminated grade. The actual membrane requirements remain the acceptance basis.

| Comparison | Use the right evidence |
|---|---|
| Polymer identity | HDPE material description |
| Film construction | Cross-laminated or actual alternative structure |
| Mechanical properties | Grade-specific applicable data |
| Area yield | Theoretical film quantity calculation |
| Production suitability | Trial for the intended membrane construction |
| Shipment | Actual roll and packed dimensions plus net/gross weight |

Do not let area yield stand in for strength
For planning, the PE/HDPE material reference of about 1.08 m³/t gives theoretical area of about 10.8 m²/kg at 100 μm and 7.2 m²/kg at 150 μm. This calculation describes material volume and gauge, not mechanical equivalence.
Similar area per kilogram does not prove equal maximum force, elongation or other required properties. Keep material quantity calculations in the commercial comparison and the relevant test data in the technical comparison. Both are useful, but they answer different questions.
Define an alternative-material trial clearly
Identify the existing grade and the proposed alternative, including structure, gauge, width, winding and applicable requirements. Record the selected membrane process and the observations your team will use for approval. Preserve the actual sample references in the comparison.
Ask Merily for a quotation against that defined duty. Keep packing assumptions separate: around 150 kg per roll and a six-roll pallet around 900 kg are planning references, not proof that two materials have identical strength or a fixed gross shipment weight.
Questions for This Purchase
Does equal thickness prove equal strength?
No. Compare the actual constructions and grade-specific data.
Can some HDPE surface grades be considered as alternatives?
Yes, for suitable specified membrane constructions after the required evaluation; do not assume universal equivalence.
Can I use material volume as freight volume?
No. Use actual packed dimensions for transport calculations.
